Marinda asked: My parents hide my MacBook Air from me whenever they don’t want me online (which is always). I am 19, bought the computer myself with my money, and am only living at home because Johns Hopkins’ dorms are too expensive.
My question is, can I set up a speech synth that will allow me to access my computer from my parents’ desktop and make mine “speak” so I can find it? How do I make it not go to sleep when I close it?

Honey what you need is to sit down with your parents and have a talk. You are not a little kid anymore, why don’t they want you using the computer? You should have access to it all the time since you need it for homework and stuff.

What would be easier is to get one of those things people glue to their tv remotes that they can press the button and the alarm will go off so they can find it.

If your parents have no financial hold over you then they really have no right to take your computer away, but I have a friend who was in college, lived at home with his parents, and used the computer at night for crystal meth hookups, which ruined his life, and caused him to drop out of college. As an adult I wish that someone would limit MY computer use!
That said, you could try using Insomnia
Or, in Snow Leopard, say “never” in Energy Saver < System Preferences.
Then remember to turn on Speech > Speech Recognition > Speakable Items and then set up a command using a distinct sound that won’t get confused with something else.
If the Speech doesn’t work then try narrowing down where the computer is to scan for it using the Bluetooth on your cell phone to get you within 32 feet (usually less).
